DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Grade: B+
Issue:
The incidence of domestic violence in Boone County has
remained fairly stable over the last three years.
Indicators:
The Domestic Violence Enforcement Unit (DOVE) worked 1413
domestic violence assault cases in 1998, and 1536 cases in 1999.
Goal:
To reduce the incidence of domestic violence through
education, intervention and prosecution.
Progress Statements:
- Communication between agencies involved in the DOVE
unit has enhanced clarification of each unit member's role.
- DOVE prosecutors are winning cases without testimony
from the victims of the crimes and holding abusers legally accountable for the
violence.
- Inclusion of representatives from the Probation and
Parole in the weekly DOVE meetings has assisted in holding the abuser
accountable for the violence.
- Court referral of abusers to batterer intervention
programs has increased over 1998.
Strategies:
- Increase the number of DOVE advocates from 1.5
full-time to 2 full-time advocates from The Shelter.
- Increase by 100% the number of cases tried by DOVE
prosecutors.
- Request that court security personnel designate
separate areas for victims and perpetrators when they go to court.
- Meet bi-monthly with all agencies involved in
addressing the issue of domestic violence in the community.
- Increase by 50% the number of abusers referred to
batterer's treatment programs.
