Narrative

  • A very substantial portion of the senior population is female. In St. Louis County 56 percent of the adult population 65 to 74 is female; 62 percent of the population 75 to 84 is female and 74 percent of the population age 85 and older is female. Among the age 85 and older population in the county in 2000, 4,619 were men and 13,287 were women.
  • In six of the county's areas women represent more than 80 percent of the population age 85 and older-in the Wellston/Pagedale Area over 87 percent of the 271 seniors 85 and older are women. Men are more than 40 percent of this oldest cohort in only the University City/Olivette South Area. See Tables 1 and 2 for area distributions.
