Narrative
Employment of Seniors by Age Group - St. Louis County and Missouri
- Table 1 reports the number of all persons age 65 and older in Missouri and in St. Louis County who are employed. More than 20,000 (14.3 percent) St. Louis County seniors are employed, which is a somewhat higher percentage than Missouri statewide (13.2 percent). The table then divides the total senior population into three age groups - 65-69, 70-74 and 75 and older - and reports the number employed in each age group. Not unexpectedly the percent of persons employed declines with advancing age. Among St. Louis County seniors, nearly 28 percent of the 65-69 age cohort is employed, while just over 15 percent of the 70-74 year-olds are employed. The percent employed declines further to 6.2 percent of those age 75 and older. In each age group, the percent of St. Louis residents employed is higher than the comparative percentage statewide.
- The percent of all St. Louis County seniors employed ranges from a low of 8.9 percent in the Bellefontaine Neighbors/Riverside Area and 9.5 percent in Lemay to a high of 24.0 percent in the Des Peres/Valley Park Area. However, not far behind, about 22 percent of seniors in Creve Coeur, Ladue/Clayton and University City/Olivette South were employed. Between 12 and 15 percent of seniors were employed in a majority of neighborhood areas (22).
- There is more variation in senior employment among the neighborhoods when focusing on each of the three age groups separately. For example, among the seniors age 65-69 the variation in employment among the neighborhoods ranged from a low of 18.1 percent employed in Moline to a high of 42.9 percent in Des Peres/Valley Park. As indicated on Map 2, there were 10 areas in which fewer than 25 percent of 65-69 year-olds were employed; 15 areas in which between 25 and 30 percent were employed and 12 areas in which more than 30 percent were employed.
Among the seniors age 70-74, the percent employed among the neighborhoods ranged from a low of 5.9 percent in Bellefontaine Neighbors/Riverview to a high of 31.4 percent in Ladue. The table, Graph 2 and Map 2 show there were 21 areas in which fewer than 15 percent 70-74 year-olds were employed. There were 12 areas in which from 15-25 percent were employed. However, there were only four areas with more than 25 percent employed with the greatest percent being in Ladue/Clayton (31.4 percent), followed by Creve Coeur (27.4 percent), University City/Olivette North (26.9 percent) and University City/Olivette South with 26.5 percent. Pertinent about those four areas (and some others), is that they were among those having the highest percentage of seniors holding graduate and professional degrees. It can be inferred that professional persons are more likely to continue employment into more advanced years. That conclusion is further supported by employment data for seniors age 75 and older. As shown in the table, Graph 3 and displayed on Map 3, there were only four neighborhoods in which more than 10 percent in the oldest age group were employed. Those four include three - Ladue/Clayton, Creve Coeur and University City/Olivette North - that were also in the top four in employment of those age 70-74.
- Among the seniors in the 75 and older age category fewer than 5.0 percent were employed in 15 neighborhoods and in 17 neighborhoods between 5.0 and 9.0 percent were employed (Graph 3).
