State Overview -- 2000 Census Data on Households - Type, Location and Change 1990-2000

The Decennial Population Census counts all persons as either living in a household or in group quarters. In 1990 there were 1,961,206 households in Missouri with an average of 2.5 persons living in each household. By 2000 the number of Missouri households had increased to 2,194,594 - an increase of 11.9 percent. Just as in 1990 there was an average of 2.5 persons living in each Missouri household.

Types of Households

Households are reported as being either "family" or "non-family" households. Family households are those occupied by two or more persons related to each other. Households occupied by two or more unrelated persons are classified as non-family. All households occupied by a single person are classified as non-family. The following table shows the number and proportion of family and nonfamily households in 1990 and 2000.

As Table 1 shows, there were 1,476,516 family households in 2000 and 718,078 nonfamily households. Family households accounted for 67.3 percent of all households in 2000, and nonfamily accounted for 32.7 percent. But the number of family households increased by 7.9 percent from 1990 to 2000, while the number of nonfamily households increased by 21.1 percent. Consequently, the proportion of nonfamily households increased from 30.2 percent of the total in 1990 to 32.7 percent in 2000. Among the more probable reasons for the greater increase in nonfamily households are: a growing proportion of older population is continuing to live alone or with one or more unrelated persons following loss of a spouse; and, a growing proportion of younger adults is postponing marriage and choosing to live alone or with unrelated persons.

Households 1990-2000: Total, Family and NonFamily

Family households are reported as those who have children age 18 and under living in the household and those family households that do not. Table 2 shows that the proportion of family households with children declined from 50.7 percent of all family households in 1990 to 47.4 percent in 2000. A majority of family households no longer include young children and/or youth. The most likely explanation is demographic. The baby boom generation (age 35-54 in 2000) population increased by 30 percent from 1990 to 2000. A growing proportion of baby boom families no longer have children at home.

Group Quarters

The purpose of the census is to do a complete count of the population regardless of where they live. Although 97.1 percent of the population lives in a household, the remaining 2.9 percent are residing in what are called "group quarters". They are counted in the Census from their location in "group quarters". The total population residing in group quarters increased from 145,397 in 1990 to 162,058 in 2000 - an increase of 11.5 percent.

As shown in the Table 3, there are two types of group quarters:

Institutional - these are places where the residents are in custody. They are not free to come and go as they wish. Institutional group quarters include prisons, custodial hospitals, most nursing homes, etc. As shown in the table, there were 90,430 Missourians counted as residents of institutional group quarters in 2000 - an increase of 11.8 percent from the 80,854 in that residential category in 1990.
Non-institutional - these are citizens who are living in group quarters such as college dormitories, fraternity or sorority houses, military barracks, etc. Residents of those group quarters are free to come and go as they wish. As the table indicates, the number of Missourians residing in non-institutional group quarters increased from 64,5433 in 1990 to 71,628 in 2000 - an increase of 11.0 percent.
