Racial Categories of Missouri Hispanics 2000
Hispanics as an Ethnic Group and the Racial Categories of Missouri Hispanic People

OSEDA Regional Grouping of Counties

Many demographic factors vary by region within the state of Missouri. For the convenience of our user community, OSEDA prepares tables using three different regional groupings of counties: Extension, Economic Development and Transportation.

For each of these groupings, one table summarizes the indicators by regional total and a second table shows values for each county grouped by region. Users may select the county grouping most helpful for their application and understanding.

An important fact about the Hispanic population is that it is not a racial group for statistical purposes. It is counted by the Population Census as an ethnic group. Hispanics report themselves on the Census in whichever racial category best describes them.

According to the 2000 population census 52.0 percent of Missouri Hispanics reported their race as "white", 34.2 percent reported their race as "other" and 8.6 percent reported themselves as multi-racial. The remaining 5.2 percent reported themselves as African-American, American Indian, or Asian. It is likely that the 34.2 percent who report themselves as "other" regard themselves as having a Central or South American Indian heritage.

Table 1 reports the racial distribution of Missouri Hispanics as Hispanic people reported themselves in the 2000 Census. Table 1 includes the racial distribution of Hispanics for each county within the state.

Additional tables are attached which report the racial distribution of Hispanics for three different sets of regions: eight University of Missouri Extension regions; 10 Missouri Department of Transportation regions; and 13 Missouri Department of Economic Development regions.
