Missouri and the Nation
State Level Migration Flows to and from Missouri 1995-2000
The 2000 Population Census reports that 473,369 persons moved from another U.S. state to Missouri between 1995 and 2000. However, the 2000 Census shows that 427,316 persons living in Missouri in 1995 moved to another state by 2000. The difference between the two shows that Missouri had a net gain of 46,035 persons who were living in another state in 1995.
How respondents to the 2000 Census answered the question regarding their state of residence in 1995 provides an indication of the number of people moving to Missouri from each of the other 49 states between 1995 and 2000. However, answers to the same question also shows the number of persons living in Missouri in 1995 who relocated to another state between 1995 and 2000.
It is of some significance that six of the eight states surrounding Missouri (Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas) had more people relocate to Missouri from 1995-2000 than the number who relocated from Missouri to one of those adjoining states.
States from which Missouri had the greatest gain in population from 1995-2000
The state with which Missouri had the greatest exchange in number of residents between 1995 and 2000 was California. Between 1995 and 2000 there were 39,492 persons who moved to Missouri from California but, during the same period 24,291 Missourians moved to California. In the exchange of residents with California, Missouri had a net gain15, 201 during that five-year period – the largest Missouri net gain from any of the states.
Following Missouri’s net gain of 15,201 from California, the next largest net gain for Missouri was the difference of 60,174 persons moving from Illinois to Missouri between 1995 and 2000 while 45,728 moved from Missouri to Illinois. Missouri achieved a net in-migration of 14,446 from the difference in migration between the two states from 1995-2000.
Aside from the relatively large net population gain in Missouri from California and from Illinois between 1995 and 2000, there were only two other states, Kansas and Iowa from which Missouri had a net gain of as many as 5,000 from 1995-2000. There were 58,785 persons living in Kansas in 1995 who moved to Missouri by 2000, while 53,622 moved from Missouri to Kansas – a net gain of 5,163 for Missouri from 1995-2000. Concurrently there were 17,860 persons living in Iowa in 1995 who relocated to Missouri by 2000, while there were 12,580 Missourians who moved to Iowa. These relocations resulted in a net population gain of 5,280 by 2000.
As shown in Table 1 there were 29 states from which more people relocated to Missouri from 2995-2000 than the number of Missourians who relocated to those states. Aside from California, Illinois, Kansas and Iowa the states from which Missouri had the greatest net gain from migration from 1995-2000 were from Nebraska (+3,829), Arkansas (+2,701), Wisconsin (+2,424), New York (+2,121), Oklahoma (+2,089), Michigan (+2,071) and (+2,004) from Pennsylvania.
States to which Missouri had the largest relocation of population from 1995-2000
The state to which Missouri experienced the greatest net loss of population from 1995-2000 was Florida. There were 17,370 persons living in Florida in 1995 who relocated to Missouri by 2000. However, during that same time there were 25,873 persons living in Missouri in 1995 who had relocated to Florida by 2000. Missouri experienced a net out-migration of 8,503 to Florida between 1995 and 2000.
Following Florida other states to which there was a significant relocation from Missouri from 1995-2000 were, in order: Arizona (-3,064), Alabama (-2,176), Texas (-2,144), Georgia (-2,074), and Tennessee (-1,929).
