Services are designed to assist elementary

mainstream in skills by the time they complete elementary school. The emphasis is on
acceleration of learning, not remediation. The schools are following the model developed
by Dr. Henry Levin of Stanford University. |

At-risk Area Vocational Technical Learning
Centers
|
| Authority |
|
Service or
Program
Description |
Many area vocational technical schools have
implemented special instructional programs that allow eligible students to make-up or gain
academic credit while being given the chance to also receive vocational training. Care is
taken to assure that students master the required course work for a particular subject.
The academic credit is recommended only through an agreement between appropriate personnel
at the high school and vocational school. The centers are located exclusively in area
vocational schools to allow access to smaller districts that may have students that can
benefit. Individuals are selected into the program based on their ability to benefit and
desire to pursue their education in an alternative setting. The design, staffing, and
level of service varies at each location; however, there are common threads that connect
all centers. Probably the most important feature of the program is a second chance for
certain students to receive a high school diploma while gaining skills to obtain
employment. |
